Bird Lois Old and Yong

1924 ~ 2014

Our sweet mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend passed away on Christmas Eve, her favorite day of the year, of natural causes incident to age. She was 90 years old. She was born on June 10, 1924, the fourth child of her parents Riley Lyman and Alvaretta Robinson Dixon in Manard, Idaho, on Camas Prairie.  She graduated from Gooding High School (Idaho) where her family had moved so the children could attend good schools.  She attended LDS Business College and Utah Agricultural College (USU) before meeting her sweetheart, Verle W. Nelson.  They were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on June 10, 1947.  He passed away on February 20, 1948 of cancer.  She married Ruland J. Bird on September 18, 1953.  They moved several places, but settled in Murray in 1958 where she has lived ever since.  Ruland died on October 29, 2001.

Lois loved to sew, read the newspaper, help RJ with the horses, make quilts, and research family history. She spent many years preparing names for temple work and was the ‘family genealogist’ for a long time.  She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and was a volunteer docent at the DUP Museum in Salt Lake for several years.   She also loved her time with her grandchildren and loved when they came over to her house.  She prepared special activities with them and they all have fond memories of their time with her.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband Verle, her husband Ruland, her daughter Susan, her parents, her brothers Clifton and Dwight Dixon and her sister Beth Cheney.  She is survived by her son, Ron Bird, her daughter, Verlene West, nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Dot Dahn and DelOra Johnson.

Lois was truly an elect lady. Our family can never repay her for being a mother to Kristen and a grandmother to Chandler when the need arose. She was always so supportive and we always felt welcomed and loved in her home. Her sweet smile and willingness to serve never failed to warm our hearts. Our family grieves with yours because she was not only a sister-in-law but an important part of the personal family of those we love and cherish. May God be with her as she goes to the next stage of her journey.
    Love Lee and Kathee Bird
