Claudia May DeWaal Wright

1944 ~ 2020

Claudia May DeWaal Wright, 76, departed this life on June 29, 2020.

She was born on May 28, 1944 in Salt Lake City, UT to Jacob DeWaal and Barbara (Cheshire) DeWaal and is the oldest of 9 children.

She graduated from Southern Utah State College (SUSC) in 1966 with a BA in Elementary Education. In 1970 she received her Learning Disabilities (LD) endorsement also from SUSC. She taught 4th grade, 1st grade, and special education. Her favorite grade to teach was 2nd grade which she taught at Wittier Elementary in West Valley City, UT. She retired after dedicating 35 years of her life to teaching.

She was caring and compassionate to all those who came in contact with her. She would often stay up late at night sewing dresses and clothes for her students that were in need. Claudia would drop off little gifts and notes to anyone she knew that was going through a hard time. If you had a problem, you knew you could always go to mom. She would listen to you and make you laugh.

She held several callings in her ward in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was an amazing Young Women’s President, taught Sunday school with her husband, David, and worked in the library which she loved.

She was the coupon queen and faithfully used her “Happenings” book. She loved to sing, crochet, shop the deals, but most importantly spend time with her family.

While attending SUSC she met and married Blake Wesley Larsen on December 18, 1965 and together they had 1 daughter. On January 6, 1984, she married David George Wright her husband of 36 years and all together they had 7 children.

She leaves behind a spouse, David George Wright; siblings, Alice (Larry) Riddle, Mike (Mary) DeWaal, Matt (Jolene) DeWaal, Ilauna (Danny) Parks, Adam (Jenny) DeWaal, and Anderson Thomas; children, Elizabeth (Richard) Wright, Wendy (John) DeLaughter, Angela (Gregory) Segura, David (Danielle) Wright, Benjamin Wright, Kayla (Derek) Schutz; 30 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by 2 brothers, Howard and Clark DeWaal; parents, Jacob and Barbara DeWaal; and daughter-in-law, Tiffany Wright.

A Memorial and Celebration of Life will be held in her honor on Saturday-July 11, 2020 at Hurricane Valley Heritage Park, 35 W State Street, Hurricane, UT from 7-9 p.m.

Claudia was such a sweetheart! Bruce and I enjoyed getting to know her in Woodledge Ward, and even beyond after she moved. We are so sorry to know of her passing, but have peace that she is in a wonderful place. Sending blessings of love always. Paula and Bruce Strong
